SDC webinar recap: Green education beyond the classroom; How cross-sectoral action can drive a just and sustainable transition
In the face of rising inequalities and accelerating climate impacts, green education is emerging as a strategic lever for change. On 3 July 2025, over 70 colleagues from across SDC and its partners came together to explore how education—understood in its broadest sense—can help drive inclusive, resilient, and low-carbon development.
The webinar marked the publication of the Input Paper on Green Education.
Participants examined how green education can be mainstreamed across vocational training, climate action, DRR, private sector engagement and economic development.
🔍 Key messages:
- Green education is not a sectoral niche - it is a strategic lever for resilience, inclusion, and sustainability.
- It plays a dual role in the transition toward a just and sustainable future: first, by equipping people with green skills - technical, vocational, and transformative - and second, by acting as a powerful system in itself.
- Education prepares learners not only for green jobs, but also to become active citizens, responsible consumers, and agents of systemic change.
- Education systems also generate demand for green products and services - through infrastructure, procurement, and innovation - and can drive partnerships and local green economies.
- As SDC phases out of basic education, future engagement lies in mainstreaming green education across sectors such as VSD, climate action, DRR, and private sector development - ensuring it continues to shape inclusive and resilient societies.
The session featured diverse project pitches from Albania, Serbia, Niger, Burkina Faso, and UNITAR, followed by breakout discussions focused on identifying concrete entry points for cross-sector action.
