Latest special coin issue: Swissmint is honouring the 2026 Animal of the Year with its own special coin
Bern, 16.03.2026 — “Hedgehog”, the latest special coin, is Swissmint's tribute to Pro Natura's Animal of the Year for 2026. Issued on 19 March 2026, this bimetallic coin showcases this threatened species.

Swissmint produces exclusive limited-edition collector coins under the name “Swiss special coins”. This new special coin raises public awareness of Switzerland's native wildlife while sending a signal about nature and species conservation.
Annual announcement of the Animal of the Year
Since 1998, Pro Natura has named its Animal of the Year in order to raise awareness of species in Switzerland that are threatened and in need of protection. In 2026, the focus is on the hedgehog as a symbol of native wildlife and the close connection between people and nature.
The special coins bring our country's history and diversity to life
The new hedgehog special coin is an alloy of aluminium-bronze and copper-nickel. The CHF 10 coin depicts the animals in their natural habitat, weighs 15g and has a diameter of 33mm.
The obverse shows in the foreground two hedgehogs facing each other in profile, with finely crafted details that are particularly striking. In the background, a third hedgehog, facing front, appears to be observing the scene. This lends the motif additional depth and a strong narrative effect. The coin edge bears the inscription “Tier des Jahres” and the word “hedgehog” in the four national languages.
The reverse of the coin shows an artistic impression of the hedgehog's natural habitat. The motif highlights the animal's spines, whose lines subtly suggest the silhouette of the moon. This symbolic depiction references the hedgehog's nocturnal lifestyle and strengthens the link between the animal and its natural habitat. To underline this nocturnal atmosphere, the intentionally minimalist surfaces contain stars which clearly highlight the moon and the night sky. Around the edge of the coin is the face value of CHF 10, the inscription “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA”, the minting year 2026 and the mint mark B for Swissmint.
The coin will be released in a limited issue comprising 7,500 coins in uncirculated quality with an issue price of CHF 15, and 2,500 coins in proof quality with an issue price of CHF 55. It will be available from 19 March 2026 in Swissmint's official online shop.
